Systems Biology of Cells in Engineered Environments

An NSF IGERT Program at the University of Delaware

The IGERT program in Systems Biology of Cells in Engineered Environments (SBE2) is a multi-disciplinary doctoral traineeship program for students interested in studying Cells in Engineered Environments using the technologies and approaches of Systems Biology. The program involves Faculty from five Colleges with expertise in complementary research area that intersect with the theme of Systems Biology in Engineering Environments (SBE2). In addition, it provides an enriched multi- and interdisciplinary research and training environment, as well as engaged training in bioethics, research ethics, business innovation, and the skills to communicate science to an array of public audiences.

The Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) program is the flagship interdisciplinary doctoral training program of the National Science Foundation (NSF). IGERT grants are awarded by NSF to innovative graduate programs in US universities for training PhD scientists and engineers with the interdisciplinary background and the technical, professional and personal skills needed to succeed in the careers of the 21st century.

Since 1998, the IGERT program has made 215 awards to over 100 lead universities in 41 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. IGERT has provided funding for nearly 5,000 graduate students and students accepted to this prestigious program receive support toward tuition, fees and research supplies, plus a sizeable stipend. From Methanol To Butanol
UD receives multimillion-dollar ARPA-E award for methane conversion research

Sep. 23, 2013 - The University of Delaware has been awarded a three-year grant totaling more than $3 million from the Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA-E) to use an engineered microorganism to produce butanol, a useful transportation fuel, from methanol and carbon dioxide.

Apr. 2, 2013 - April Kloxin, assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at the University of Delaware, has been awarded a $500,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development Award to study the extracellular signals that regulate tissue stability, disease and repair in the body.
